Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining.There is hypoacid and hyperacid gastritis (that is, high or low acidity).
As is known, the stomach produces hydrochloric acid, its content determines the type of gastritis.Diet plays a leading role in treating gastritis.
Basic dietary rules
The main goal of a diet for gastritis is to adhere to a diet that ensures normal digestion.
The treatment table for gastritis (per day) should include:
- 90-100 grams.protein (60% animal),
- 90-100 grams.fat (75% animal)
- 400-420 grams.carbohydrates.
The total energy value should be 2800-3000 kcal.
Nutritional principles for gastritis
Power mode
First, you should follow an eating schedule (at the same time).Secondly, with gastritis, meals should be small, 4-5 times a day, but at the same time, snacks should be avoided (they stimulate the secretion of "excess" gastric juice and reduce its production during breakfast/lunch/dinner, disrupting the processing and assimilation of food).
Reading while eating, watching TV and “eating while running” should be strictly prohibited.
Know the measure
With gastritis, the saying "you feel a little hungry after eating" becomes more relevant than ever.
Firstly, the feeling of fullness occurs only 10-15 minutes after eating, secondly, a full stomach does not respond well to its functions, especially with gastritis.
Chew food
Chewing food for a long time (at least 25-30 seconds per mouthful) promotes more thorough mechanical processing of food, making the stomach more susceptible to pain.In addition, hunger in this case is satisfied faster (prevents overeating).
Refuse complicated dishes
The menu for gastritis should include simple but varied dishes.A large amount of ingredients in the dish makes it difficult for the stomach to digest them.
Rest after eating
After each meal, you need to rest 15-20 minutes (not necessarily sleep).You can read books or listen to music.
Prohibited foods for gastritis
With increased acidity

For gastritis with increased hydrochloric acid production, the diet should be aimed at reducing the formation of gastric juice.Therefore, the principle of the treatment table includes 3 points:
- mechanical– avoid eating foods with coarse fiber (bran bread, radishes, radishes, “old” meat);
- chemicals– prohibit foods that increase the production of gastric juice (alcohol, coffee, white cabbage, citrus fruits, sour fruits and berries, rich broths);
- heat– do not eat too cold food or, conversely, hot food (optimal temperature is 50 degrees).
Prohibited foods for hyperacid gastritis:
- fresh, exceptionally warm bread, buttery pastries and puff pastry;
- cereals: pearl barley, legumes, millet, barley, corn (crude fiber);
- Rich meat and fish broths, okroshka, borscht, mushroom soup (contain many extracts that stimulate the production of gastric juice);
- fatty and tough meats of any kind: duck, chicken, pork, smoked meat (they are difficult to digest in the stomach and increase the formation of hydrochloric acid);
- fatty and salty fish (stimulates the formation of gastric juice);
- fermented milk products (all sharp cheeses, limited to sour cream);
- vegetables: rutabaga, radish, radish, sorrel, spinach, canned vegetables (crude fiber), as well as onions and garlic, especially raw (stimulates gastric glands in the mucous membrane);
- sweets: sour fruits and berries, unripe fruits, chocolate, dried fruits (crude fiber, increases acidity);
- spices: mustard, pepper, horseradish (stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid);
- carbonated drinks, kvass, coffee (stimulates the release of hydrochloric acid, increases gas formation, causes heartburn);
- Fried or boiled eggs, animal fat (except butter).
Gastritis with low acidity
The goal of a low-acidity gastritis diet is to stimulate (to a moderate degree) the production of gastric juice.Food should be eaten after the secretion of hydrochloric acid begins, that is, in the first stages (advertisements or programs about food, beautiful photos of dishes, "tasty" conversations can stimulate the secretion of gastric juice).
Prohibited foods for acid-deficient gastritis:
- fresh bread, rich pastries (food is heavy for the stomach, making it difficult to process chemically and mechanically);
- Limit pearl barley, beans, and millet;
- fatty meat, meat with membranes (films), canned foods, smoked meats (inadequate mechanical food processing, excessive release of hydrochloric acid);
- fatty and salty fish;
- vegetables and fruits with crude fiber (white cabbage, radishes, radishes, cucumbers, bell peppers), mushrooms;
- berries with seeds or thick skin (raspberries, strawberries, red grapes, gooseberries, figs);
- sharp and salty cheeses, milk – neutralizes hydrochloric acid;
- pork, beef, lamb fat and lard (indigestible due to low hydrochloric acid production, indigestible food);
- spices and seasonings (irritating the gastric mucosa), as well as chocolate, grape juice, wine;
Authorized product
With increased acidity

Allowed and recommended products and dishes for gastritis with increased acid formation should neutralize the high content of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and create favorable conditions for digestion in the stomach (mashes, liquid porridge, boiled meat, fish and poultry).
Products allowed to treat acid-secreting gastritis:
- “yesterday's” or dry bread, crackers, dry biscuits (biscuits);
- pureed vegetables (carrots, potatoes, radishes, cauliflower), peeled tomatoes;
- fruits that do not contain crude fiber (bananas, baked apples, ripe pears, sweet berries, as well as the preparation of fruit drinks, juices, jelly, jelly from them);
- sweet products: milk cream, marshmallows, marshmallows, honey (drinking honey water 1.5-2 hours before meals reduces acid in the stomach, has a healing effect and stimulates immunity);
- butter (natural and ghee), vegetable oil (contains vitamin E, which helps neutralize hydrochloric acid);
- lean meats and poultry (veal, beef without tendons and chicken, “white” chicken);
- milk, cream, low-fat cottage cheese (antiacid effect - prevents heartburn, covers the gastric mucosa, neutralizes gastric juice);
- river fish (contains a large amount of unsaturated fats, which helps normalize the activity of the digestive tract) in the form of cutlets or steamed or boiled;
- seafood;
- parsley and dill, vanillin and cinnamon in small quantities to stimulate appetite;
- soft-boiled eggs or steamed omelets (preferably white);
- cabbage, potato, carrot juice (or mixture) – antacid effect, high vitamin U content – anti-ulcer factor;
- rosehip decoction (rich in vitamin C, has healing effects and stimulates appetite), weak tea or coffee with milk, cocoa, mineral water (removes toxins).
With low acidity
Products recommended for gastritis with low acidity stimulate hydrochloric acid production.Eating and drinking must coincide with the start of gastric secretion.
Products allowed to treat gastritis caused by acid deficiency:
- dry bread, crackers, baked goods;
- porridge with water or diluted milk, thoroughly cooked, liquid, meatballs and steamed cutlets, puddings, soups;
- veal, beef, skinless chicken;
- low-fat meat and fish broths, you can add cereals, pasta, if well tolerated, borscht soup, cabbage soup, beetroot soup with finely chopped vegetables;
- potatoes, zucchini, pumpkin, white cabbage (finely chopped), cauliflower (boiled, steamed or in pureed form, for pudding);
- juice from potatoes, cabbage, carrots immediately before meals (stimulates the release of hydrochloric acid);
- honey water before meals (stimulates acid formation), watermelon, peeled grapes, baked apples, jams and mousses from very ripe and sweet fruits and berries;
- tea with lemon, weak coffee, cocoa with diluted milk, rosehip decoction;
- vegetable oil, butter;
- fermented milk products, grated cheese and light cheese in small slices;
- Soft boiled eggs or egg white omelets.
The need to follow the diet
There is no medication that can completely cure acute gastritis or lead to stable remission of chronic gastritis.
All advertised medicines, intended for everyone, are sold in pharmacies without a prescription.But they only (temporarily) eliminate unpleasant symptoms (heartburn, pain, belching).
Going on a diet for gastritis not only makes the patient's life easier, but also disciplines him.
The treatment table for gastritis is complete and healthy food, normalization of lifestyle, abandonment of bad habits and poor quality products.In addition, the diet for gastritis helps to normalize weight (those who have lost weight will gain weight, and those with excess body weight will lose weight), since timely and nutritious nutrition normalizes not only the activity of the digestive tract, but also all metabolic processes, and therefore, strengthens the immune system.
Consequences of not following the diet

If you refuse to follow a diet for any type of gastritis, the patient may experience the following problems:
- vitamin deficiency;
- diseases of the liver, pancreas, duodenum, large intestine and small intestine (due to impaired stomach function);
- significant loss of body weight (fear of eating);
- duodenal ulcer disease and its consequences: ulcer perforation, ulcer penetration - germination into the organ, bleeding;
- the formation of atrophic gastritis and its transformation into gastric cancer.
